Joel Landau for a Positive Change
Joel Landau Supports:
* Transparent Government, Working for You
* Building Strong, Safe Neighborhoods
* Economic and Environmental Sustainability
* Efficient and Effective Use of Your Tax Money

My name is Joel Landau, and I have the skills, experience, and mindset to serve you with good government.

You don't need to guess what I will bring to Greensboro's City Council. The issues I talk about are the same as what I've been actually doing for years. Here's my record:

* 21 YEARS OF SUCCESSFULLY MANAGING LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES

Many candidates will say it's important to support our local small businesses - When I talk about it, I'm speaking from actual experience. I started and successfully operated my own store - JOEL's Natural Foods and Supplements, and have also served as General Manager of Deep Roots Market. On behalf of Deep Roots I received the 2009 Small Business Retailer of the Year award. My skills and experience involve financial oversight, budgeting and planning, doing things efficiently, organizational follow through, and above all, a dedication to excellent customer service. I will serve you with the same dedication I've displayed in my working career.

* A LEADER IN SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is a new buzzword - many candidates will say it's important but no other has my long history of demonstrated commitment to sustainability. Since my college years I've personally prioritized conserving resources and being energy efficient. In the late 1980's I was a founding Board member of Citizens for Waste Reduction and Recycling. In 2007 I was instrumental in City Council's adoption of The US Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement. Last year I assisted Mayor Yvonne Johnson with the formation of the city's Community Sustainability Council (CSC), on which I serve as Co-Chair. At the CSC we've brought different groups together so they can work more effectively, and we propose measures to the City Council to make Greensboro a greener city.

My commitment to Sustainability extends to my work life: At Deep Roots we include environmental stewardship as a core principle and part of our Mission statement, and we act on that commitment.

* BUILDING STRONGER NEIGHBORHOODS

I'm actively involved with the Greensboro Neighborhood Congress (GNC). The GNC works to empower neighborhoods to strengthen themselves, and also provides an effective voice for their concerns on a city-wide level. I'm proud of our recent achievements in areas such as: renewing the highly successful RUCO program to reduce substandard housing; strengthening the noise ordinance; restoring protest petition rights to Greensboro; being a voice for neighborhood concerns during the Land Development Ordinances rewrite process; proposing a more accountable and transparent process for how the City responds to public records requests; providing educational forums with community leaders on key topics; and assisting individual neighborhoods in achieving their goals.

I serve on the GNC's Executive Committee, also the Issues and Bylaws Committee, and as the delegate from my neighborhood association.

I also previously served 4 years on my neighborhood's Board of Directors, including 2 years as President.

* SMART GROWTH

I've served since January of 2006 on the Greensboro Planning Board. I've acquired extensive knowledge re land use issues, and have been a voice for containing urban sprawl and seeing that development respects neighborhood compatibility.

In all my activities, I've established a record of being dependable, coming prepared, and having no ties to private industry groups. I've demonstrated the ability to work well with others to get things done. If my record appeals to you, please support my campaign to become Greensboro's District 4 City Council representative. And thank you for taking the time to be involved in making our City the best it can be!

Truly,

Joel Landau

"Landau is, in short, the most accomplished and effective candidate never to have held elective office. If we give this guy a seat on our city council - even if it is only one of nine - he will bring fresh ideas to a body reluctant to abandon yesterdays conventional wisdom.'' Yes!Weekly 10/31/07

''Joel Landau is hard working, well meaning and knows how to get things done" "He is someone that you can sit down with and discuss the issues.'' The Rhinoceros Times 10/4/07
